Nonsuch park

©2016 Klicksmart Photography, all rights reservedNonsuch Park  – a green pocket of the Borough of Sutton bordering with Epsom & Ewell – has and is everything that a community park should have and should be.

Expanse of fields and woods where you can enjoy a quiet walk and spot a variety of plants, trees, flowers and wildlife.   There is a children’s play area, with swings, sandpit and a picnic area.    A lovely old fashioned mansion is at the heart of the park; it is used for weddings and events.  Adjoining the mansion is a walled garden where you can find a fish pond and a romantic rose arch tunnel that inspires some wonderful images.  For a short time in spring, a well established very old fragrant wisteria covers the longest side of the open garden.  A café area serves coffees, teas, cakes and ice creams!  The Nonsuch Wing Museum and the Palace Gallery are only open on selected times http://www.friendsofnonsuch.co.uk/

A few Sundays ago, the Gallery was open and I managed to briefly speak to a couple of volunteers there before a family photo session.    The volunteers explained why Friends of Nonsuch was established and invited me to see the Gallery – I promised to get back as it was time to meet the family for the photo session.

After a brief introduction, we all made our way into the walled garden where we broke the ice and soon the kids were blowing bubbles, were playing some instruments, were running around, had a lollipop and then they enjoyed an ice cream on a bench – all this was happening as I was taking informal natural photos.  These kids reminded me of things that can be easily forgotten – fun, laughter, be playful and giggle!   Their smiley faces tell a story.

A few days later, looking back at the photos on a particularly miserable cloudy and rainy day, I recalled the fun and the thought made me smile.   As adults we forget how to enjoy the simplest things; how to let that inner child play its part.

Visiting Nonsuch Park always brings back personal memories that are very dear to me – the wedding reception, strolling in the walled garden with my parents, pushing the pram when my daughter was only a few months old, her collecting conkers in the autumn at five years old – also some embarrassing moments, when our dog took sandwiches from a very young couple having a quiet picnic on a summer afternoon!

In years to come, I hope that the family in the park will recall the playfulness and joy they had and treasure the memories of an unforgettable Sunday afternoon that I was privileged to share with them.
